Meet Patience Brewster

Meet Patience Brewster: designer, artist, children’s picture book author

Patience Brewster (her real name) was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts to a large family of eight. She describes the horses, dogs, cats, chickens, pigs and cows that populated the fields surrounding her home as her “pals” and talks at length about how she was, and is, inspired by them.

From an early age, drawing was her passion—a practice she continues today. By the time she married in 1977, she had created a towering portfolio of original artworks. At the suggestion of her husband, she presented a series of her illustrations to publishers in New York and, at age 25, signed her first children’s book contract. Over the next 25 years, Patience went on to illustrate 35 books for both children and adults. She continued to provide illustrations to several greeting card publishers and painted for exhibitions; her subsequent shows helped to define her style even further.

In 2000, she licensed a collection of holiday illustrations to create what would become the renowned line of unique ornaments and gifts she called Krinkles—and they sold out immediately. This astonishing success encouraged Patience to launch her own greeting card company in 2002, which was met with a warm welcome from its inception.

In 2009, she began production of her signature ornaments and gifts. Her objective was to create a smaller line of handmade and hand-painted sculptures, which she could nurture from drawing all the way to store shelves. Working directly with craftspeople, sculptors, and painters, from start to finish, she creates the whimsical, one-of-a-kind gifts and collectibles coveted by Grandin Road customers today.

Patience Brewster continues to be the lead artist, creating every single image for the pieces her two companies produce. She works with her husband, her daughter, and a small team of dedicated employees, and resides in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

From her Dash Away Reindeer and Elves to her playful Nativity Scene and Nutcracker characters, Patience Brewster’s original artworks come to life in many forms (ornaments, stationary, linens, and more).
