Process: In the early 20th century, many skilled European carpenters and painters immigrated to southern Brazil, constructing houses, barns, and churches for their colonial communities. Today, as older homes in this area are slated for demolition, technicians come to reclaim this straight, robust wood. The history of the structure is studied, and the details of the wood, such as species and preservation materials, are registered. Once this is finished, skilled carpenters use specialized tools to preserve the wood, keeping it intact. The wood is sent to a processing facility, where nails, screws and metal components are extracted. Each piece is classified by species (Parana Pine, Imbuia, Cedar, Canela, Peroba, and other), beauty, and quality. The wood is then treated to eliminate any pests and fungus that may be present. Finally the wood is heat-treated and sent to be crafted into beautiful pieces of furniture.
