Doormats and welcome mats
Doormats play double duty: they welcome friends and defend against dirt and debris.

Mud, dirt, snow, and other debris can damage your floors, so you want to keep as much out as possible. The location of and traffic at the door will impact the type of mat you need. For instance, if the mat is by a frequently used mudroom door, you will want brush-like fibers or sculpting to remove large debris and absorb excess moisture.

If you have dogs or children, you may want to place a mat both outside and inside the door to catch even more of the dirt. At a front door, you may want a more decorative, seasonal mat. Just be sure to shake out or vacuum periodically to keep them clean.
