How to make a perfect bed
A high-quality mattress is the foundation of a good night's sleep, yet what you layer on top of the bed can also have tremendous impact on the quality of your rest. Follow these steps to make a perfect bed:
Mattress pad: a mattress pad, or mattress topper, protects the mattress from stains and helps reduce allergens. It also adds a layer of comfort.
Sheets: because they're the layer right next to your body, sheets get a lot of attention. Things to look for include:
- Fiber content (100% cotton, bamboo or cotton/polyester blends). Long-staple cotton is soft and durable but tends to be more expensive. Bamboo is cooling and eco-friendly. Blends are more durable and less expensive.
- Thread count: Thread count is highly variable, but 300-500 is a good benchmark for softness and durability.
- Weave: This refers to how the threads are woven, which has a huge impact on the way the sheets feel on your skin. Percale feels light and crisp. Sateen is silky and smooth.
Blanket: Blankets should be switched seasonally. Cotton blankets are great for spring and summer, while a down or down-alternative blanket will keep you warm and cozy in cooler temperatures.
Duvet: A duvet is a type of comforter that is made of down or synthetic fibers. Like a pillow has a pillow case, a duvet is usually protected by a cover. It can be used as a blanket, or with a more decorative duvet cover, it can be used for the top-of-bed.
Pillow: The pillow is the most personal bedding basic you can buy. Look for types that best support your sleep style side, back, or stomach. The type of stuffing - down or down-alternative - much depends on your preference and any allergy considerations.
