Rug Buying Guide
Living Room basics
- Position at least the front legs of seating atop the rug along the outer edge
- If space allows, consider a larger size, where all four legs rest entirely on the rug, to help define space
- The best layouts leave a 12" border of flooring around the perimeter
- Typically, an 8' x 10', 9' x 12' or 10' x 14' size fits nicely in an average- to larger-sized room
Dining Room basics
- Select a size large enough so that all four legs of chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out
- A rug should usually extend 24"-30" from all edges of the table (consider if your table extends)
- The best layouts leave a 12" border of flooring around the perimeter
- Typical sizes are 6' x 9', 8' x 10' and 9' x 12'
Bedroom basics
- If placing a rug beneath your bed, allow at least 12" of rug to extend beyond all edges of your bed
- A good rule of thumb: there should be at least 8" of exposed floor between your rug and nightstand
- If space allows, consider a larger size to help define space for a queen-sized bed, an 8' x 10' fits nicely; for a king, 9' x 12'
