Once the reservoir is full, capillary action allows water to soak upward keeping the soil and plant roots moist. The overflow hole drilled in the side of the planter allows drainage of excess water and prevents oversaturation. Regular watering is required for the first few weeks giving the root system time to develop. Once the roots have grown down into the troughs the plant will be able to pull moisture from the reservoir creating a self watering effect. With this system you will find the potting mix stays moist longer than traditional containers planters. Please note that even with the reservoir and self watering effect, occasional watering is still needed.

The integrated self-watering system will allow any excess water to fill the internal reservoir so the roots, once established, can "self water" from the reservoir as needed.

You should not need to add weight to the bottom of this planter as the self-watering system allows water to fill the water reservoir at the bottom which will add weight. However, if you wish to add more weight to the bottom the insert can be removed and weight added underneath it.

Yes, it's a beautiful rich blue, not Navy, more like a Royal Blue. I love mine!

It has drain holes in the removable tray insert. You do need to drill drainage holes in the exterior. The instructions include information on two different drainage options. Option 1 requires holes on the side to utilize the water trough system. Option 2 requires holes in the bottom for use as a regular planter.

Because there are 2 ways to use the planter (with or without a water reservoir) the drainage holes are not pre-drilled. There should have been instructions in the shipping box with your planter showing you where to drill drainage holes depending on how you want to use the planter. I kept the liner in mine and drilled a hole at the top right corner of the lower "box" design. The instructions have illustrations to help you see where to drill. Then I filled the troughs with pebbles, the soil on top for my plants. It was really easy.
