How hard is it to "screw" this into hard packed clay type soil? Would it be easier to pre drill (auger) a smaller hole first?

No digging needed
No digging necessary, we screwed this device into the ground and attached the 4x4 wooden post. Then we slid the new mailbox over the post and screwed some bolts in, and Voila! Sits up straight. Good anchor!

Great product, easy to install, offered great support for my light pole by attaching an 18' 4" X 4" post to the auger base allowing it to become a firm base to put the tapered light post over. I found it to be a wonderful tool for solving my problem
